Gangguan pada kelenjar tiroid dan hormon tiroid akan menimbulkan gejala penyakit tiroid yang berbeda-beda, tergantung jenis dan penyebabnya  Penyakit tiroid terjadi ketika kelenjar tiroid mengalami perubahan bentuk, serta menghasilkan hormon tiroid yang terlalu sedikit (hipotiroidisme) atau terlalu banyak (hipertiroidisme). Perubahan bentuk kelenjar tiroid sendiri dapat disebabkan oleh penyakit gondok, nodul tiroid, dan kanker tiroid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hipotiroid atau hipotiroidisme, berarti kekurangan hormon akibat kelenjar tiroid tidak dapat memproduksi dalam jumlah yang cukup. Hipotiroid lebih sering dialami oleh wanita, terutama yang usianya lebih dari 60 tahun. Namun, tidak menutup kemungkinan dialami oleh pria maupun wanita pada usia yang lebih muda.  Pada awalnya\u00a0hipotiroidisme\u00a0tidak menampakkan gejala. Akibatnya seringkali orang tidak menyadari bahwa dirinya mengalami kondisi tersebut.
